Paint Protection Film (PPF) is one of the most effective paint protection solutions available on the market today. It reliably shields against mechanical damage, chemicals, and weathering. Like any solution, it has its strengths as well as its weaknesses. In this post, you will find specific information on the types of films available, how they differ, and how to properly care for them after installation.

Types of Paint Protection Films (PPF)

Paint Protection Film (PPF) is a transparent, multi-layer TPU film applied directly to the paint. It creates a mechanical layer that protects the bodywork from physical damage and external factors.

There are various types of PPF protective films available on the market.

Standard PPF (TPU – Thermoplastic Polyurethane)

  • The most commonly used type of film in premium detailing.
  • Construction: adhesive layer + TPU + top coat.
  • Very good elasticity – conforms well to body lines and contours.
  • High impact resistance (e.g., stone chips, road grit).
  • Self-healing properties activated by heat.
  • Good UV resistance (non-yellowing).
  • Application: full-body wraps, high-impact areas.

Hydrophobic PPF (Self-Healing + Top Coat)

  • An upgraded version of classic TPU with a built-in hydrophobic coating (delivering a ceramic coating-like effect).
  • Superior water repellency and significantly less dirt adhesion.
  • Typically higher chemical resistance.
  • Self-healing works faster and more effectively.
  • Application: premium vehicles, clients expecting effortless maintenance.

Matte PPF (Stealth / Frozen)

  • A film that converts the paint finish to matte / satin.
  • Protects identically to standard PPF.
  • More demanding to maintain (more prone to staining).
  • Application: visual transformation + protection.

Colored / Styling PPF

  • Combines protective and visual functions.
  • Available in various colors and effects (e.g., smoked, carbon look).
  • Usually slightly lower durability than typical clear TPU.
  • Often thicker and more difficult to install.
  • Application: visual styling + protection.

Older PVC Films

  • Practically falling out of use.
  • Cheaper, but significantly less flexible.
  • No self-healing properties.
  • Greater tendency to yellow and crack.
  • Inferior protective performance.
  • Application: currently mainly a budget or industrial option.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) – Advantages

Paint Protection Film is one of the most comprehensive paint protection solutions available. It delivers high performance because it safeguards the bodywork mechanically—acting as a physical barrier against dirt, UV radiation, chemicals, stone chips, gravel, and more. What are the key advantages of PPF?

  • Effective protection against chips and scratches – the film absorbs the impact of stones and gravel, offering far superior protection in this regard compared to ceramic coatings.
  • Self-healing capabilities – minor scratches on the film vanish under the influence of heat (sunlight, hot water), eliminating the need for frequent paint corrections.
  • Protection against chemicals and bird droppings – the film limits the penetration of aggressive substances, reducing the risk of permanent etching.
  • UV resistance – quality TPU films preserve paint color and prevent clear coat oxidation.
  • Safe removal without paint damage – professionally installed and removed film does not damage the clear coat, preserving the car’s market value.
  • Aesthetic enhancement – films can deepen paint color and gloss, or even deliver an entirely different visual finish.
  • Easy repairability – in case of damage or wear, you can replace a single panel without interfering with the rest of the bodywork.

Paint Protection Film (PPF) – Disadvantages

Naturally, there are no perfect solutions, and Paint Protection Film comes with its own limitations. Much depends on expectations and approach. The perceived drawbacks of this protection include:

  • High cost – fully wrapping a vehicle is a major investment, though highly worthwhile considering the preservation of expensive paint systems and premium cars.
  • Challenging installation – improperly installed film can lift, trap dirt underneath, and look unappealing, though partnering with an experienced detailer resolves this completely.
  • Potential edge lifting – using aggressive chemicals or automated car washes can cause edges to peel, though proper care protocols significantly minimize this risk.
  • Visibility on certain paints – on very dark or soft clear coats, subtle film texture may be slightly noticeable, though with high-end films the effect is virtually imperceptible.
  • Material aging – after several years, film may gradually lose its properties, though top-tier products boast lifespans of 5 to 10 years.

How to Apply Paint Protection Film (PPF)?

PPF application is quite demanding; for beginners, it is best entrusted to experienced professionals. If you plan to install it yourself, dedicated practice is essential. 

How does the entire process work?

  1. Thorough pre-wash – remove loose dirt and contamination using a traffic film remover (e.g., CITRINE) and active foam (e.g., CARNELIAN). Rinsing thoroughly is vital; any particles left on the paint will be trapped under the film.
  2. Contact wash (two-bucket method) – clean the bodywork meticulously using a wash mitt, neutral shampoo (e.g., TOURMALINE), and two buckets equipped with grit guards.
  3. Chemical decontamination – apply a fallout remover / deironizer (e.g., AMETHYST) along with specialized products to dissolve tar, glue, and sap (e.g., AXINITE or ZIRCON).
  4. Mechanical decontamination (claying) – pick up all remaining bonded contaminants with a clay bar until the paint is perfectly smooth. Work systematically and gently.
  5. Paint correction (if necessary) – PPF “locks in” the current condition of the paint, meaning all scratches and defects will remain visible beneath the film. At minimum, a one-step gloss enhancement is advised, though a full correction is often performed.
  6. Surface degreasing – remove polishing oils and remaining oily residues using an IPA-based inspection spray (e.g., AVENTURINE) so the film bonds to an immaculate surface.
  7. Preparation of application solutions – properly dilute:
  • Slip solution (water + shampoo / PPF install gel) – for positioning and floating the film.
  • Tack solution (water + alcohol) – for anchoring and locking down edges.
  1. Cutting the film – if not working with pre-cut patterns, cut panels using a plotter or trim manually.
  2. Wet application – generously spray the panel with slip solution and position the film over the element.
  3. Initial positioning – align the film to body edges and panel lines, readjusting placement as needed.
  4. Squeegeeing – using a dedicated squeegee (specialized plastic tool), smooth the film from the center toward the edges to evacuate air bubbles and excess solution.
  5. Anchoring – apply tack solution along edges and complex areas to ensure the adhesive bonds securely to the substrate.
  6. Working complex curves and contours – warm tricky sections using a heat gun or detailing steamer, taking care not to overheat the material.
  7. Edge wrapping – carefully and cleanly wrap the film edges around panel returns.
  8. Eliminating bubbles – if small remaining moisture bubbles are noticed, squeegee them out or leave them (they can evaporate naturally).
  9. Post-heating (if required) – post-heat installed sections to relieve stress in the material and activate the film’s properties.
  10. Final inspection – verify alignment and ensure no dirt or dust has been trapped beneath the surface.
  11. Curing – keep the car in a controlled environment (shade, moderate temperatures, sheltered from water and moisture) for at least 12–24h. Full adhesive curing takes several days.

Remember to refine the paintwork to the best possible condition prior to installation. PPF does not conceal defects—it “freezes” them beneath the film. Most post-install issues stem not from the film itself, but from rushing the surface preparation stage. Work on an impeccably clean, well-lit panel and never rush positioning the film before the first squeegee pass. If the sheet is laid down crookedly at the start, it usually results in tension, lifted edges, and visible installation flaws later on.

Most common mistakes during PPF installation:

  • Too little solution – the film grabs prematurely, causing tension lines.
  • Too much solution – edge tack is noticeably compromised.
  • Inadequate degreasing – the film will quickly begin to lift.
  • Overly aggressive squeegeeing – can stretch and deform the film structure.
  • Skipping post-heating – poor stabilization over recesses and contours.

How to Care for Paint Protection Film (PPF) After Installation?

Proper aftercare significantly impacts the lifespan and visual appearance of the film. How should you care for it to enjoy its properties for years to come?

  • Wait after application – do not wash the vehicle for a minimum of 7 days, and avoid rain and extreme weather conditions (frost, severe heat) whenever possible.

  • Washing technique – use the two-bucket wash method for routine care. Make sure to rinse the wash mitt regularly.
