Iron filings embed themselves into the bodywork and wheels. Then, under the influence of moisture and oxygen, they undergo oxidation. Road salt and water act as catalysts that drastically accelerate the formation of rusty spots. This phenomenon affects not only sheet metal, but also plastic parts such as bumpers.
How can you identify the signs of rail dust and is it dangerous?
The presence of metallic contamination is easiest to notice on light-colored paint, where it appears as tiny orange or brown dots. Running your hand over washed bodywork reveals a distinct roughness, similar to sandpaper.
Ignoring rusty fallout is very dangerous for the paint coating. Metal filings penetrate the paint structure, causing irreversible micro-pitting. Over time, this defect can lead to actual corrosion.
